Robbie | February 21st, 2012 - 5:27 pm

Morning of editing photos, flashbulb issues, telephone interviews, and of course, fresh coffee…

Afternoon of skiing in glorious sunshine a bus ride away on Patscherkofel.

Crete Cave Photography Workshop

Robbie | February 18th, 2012 - 11:41 am

Between the 28th March and the 4th April, I will be holding a series of Cave Photography Workshops in Crete as part of a caving conference organised by Cretan caving club – SPOK. The cave photography workshops will include photographing different caves local to the island using many varied lighting techniques and composition. We will discuss the use of photographic equipment available today that are best suited for the types of underground photography candidates are shooting.

Running in conjunction to the program, there will be a series of seminars-master classes on the interaction of art and caving, naming photography, acoustics and music, painting and sculpture forms.

More details to follow nearer the time…

Alpine Alm

Robbie | February 12th, 2012 - 3:31 pm

Since being in Innsbruck we have visited many alpine alms that mark the top of the Rodelning run. However, none quite as delightful and cosy as Rinner Alm. The ice cold clear weather helped make the views over Innsbruck stunning and although we all got very cold hurtling down the sledging track it was great fun.

Only wished I’d drank something a little stronger than hot chocolate to warm me up before the descent! Adventure Photograph

Serene Son Trach

Robbie | February 10th, 2012 - 8:28 am

There’s something very satisfying about Vietnam. On board a small fishing boat on the the still peaceful waters of the River Son in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, without a care in the world, an unflappable fisherman relaxes back and watches the world go by as we float downstream. An incredible contrast to the ferociously wild and dangerous white water river caves not far away.

We spent two months here, as part of a Nat Geo assignment to explore the largest cave passage in the world: Hang Son Doong. A British film team were also out at the same time, and with the backing of Nat Geo produced a film about the biology and the geomorphology of the evolution of such a large cave.

Nat Geo Photographer Carsten Peter has recently won a World Press Photo Award for this particular ‘Infinite Cave’ assignment – Congrats Carsten :) Travel Photograph

Always great fun catching up with old friends over a few drinks in a London bar, especially when the weather is cold, wet and blowing a snowstorm outside.Travel Photograph

Six Months On…

Six months on and I find myself in the middle of the River Thames in London and on the Waterloo Bridge standing beside two pencil marks on the painted white handrail, that we had made in July to relocate the tripod for a shoot. Back then Nat Geo photographer Stephen Alvarez was making a series of panoramic photographs shot at dusk, whatever the weather. Armed with only my Lumix GF2, and not wanting to hang around in the cold snowstorm, I quickly made seven portrait images and ran off. Check out a more professional looking result from exactly the same location here.

The Final Piece of the Jigsaw – 3 Counties Cave

Robbie | February 6th, 2012 - 11:00 am

For most of Earth it has either been explored, climbed or seen by satellite. However, deep beneath our feet, below the surface, lies an untouched world where we can still discover new places and learn more about our planet. “For almost half a century, cavers have sought to establish a Three Counties Cave System in the north of England. That it existed across the counties of Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire there was no doubt, but actually linking the known sections all together was never going to be easy”

Now the hard work has been completed, leading protagonist Tim Allen explains all in the first of a two part account of the unbelievable effort by so many people. For more, see the latest copy of Descent issue 224.

Personally I’m still cleaning my camera gear from this great adventure!

Little Snow causes Chaos in London

Robbie | February 5th, 2012 - 6:32 pm

What little snow fell yesterday evening caused chaos in London.

As usual, the roads became playgrounds and the public transport service wavered. Great fun to watch, but pleased to not be driving in it!Cave, Cavern, Chamber, Underground, Tunnel, Adventure, Cave Photographer, Travel, Extreme Location,Cave Photographer, Action, Photograph, Photographer, Photography, Cave Photograph,

Destinations Travel Show – Earls Court

My five images entitled 'Close Encounters with the Natural World of Borneo'

Great day wandering around the Destinations Travel Show at Earls Court. Lovely evening chatting to the Wanderlust team over a few glasses of red and commenting on everyone’s picture. Apparently there was a record 9000+ entrants to the competition this year!
