I’ve received several comments asking about the giant pillars piercing the cave ceiling in a previous photograph. They are the colossal supports of the Tren Maya, rising above the jungle floor, and there are more than 15,000 of them! As we see here, its elevated tracks slice across the night like a scar circumnavigating the Yucatán Peninsula. Beneath, a truck’s headlights flare against the concrete, carving shadows into the underbelly of the structure, an unintentional spotlight revealing both its vastness and its ugliness as it tears through the forest.
