Lying directly on the equator, nearly 90% of Gabon is covered by rainforest, which is home to an incredible ecosystem, and a thriving wealth of wildlife - something I love seeing and being surrounded by during these expeditions in the tropics. Rainforests are vital for absorbing the globe’s climate-heating emissions. Thankfully, in recent years, Gabon has become the first African country to receive payment from the UN-backed Central African Forest Initiative for reducing carbon emissions by protecting its rainforest. As a result, Gabon has launched a number of conservation schemes, including the creation of 13 national parks and a project to combat illegal logging.
